Legislation requiring ethanol-blend fuels to be clearly labeled is one signature away from becoming law.
Language in Senate Bill 1451 would require retailers to clearly label any fuel blend containing between 1 percent and 10 percent ethanol.
"This is not an effort to promote or condemn ethanol," said state Rep. Phil Richardson, a Minco Republican who authored the labeling proposal. "This legislation will simply ensure that Oklahoma drivers know what they're buying at the pump."
He noted that ethanol fuel can actually damage older model cars. "The type of fuel you buy is more than a personal preference - you can ruin a car with the wrong type of fuel," Richardson said.
Senate Bill 1451, including Richardson's amendment, previously passed the Oklahoma House of Representatives on a 99-2 vote. This week the measure received final approval in the state Senate on a 44-2 vote. The bill now goes to Gov. Brad Henry to be signed into law.
"I'm pleased that this bill has received such strong support and expect the governor will sign it," Richardson said.
