Senator Sykes Pleased by Passage of State Questions 751 and 755

State Sen. Anthony Sykes (R - Dist 24 Moore/Duncan) said he was extremely pleased by the overwhelming support voters gave for a Constitutional amendment to make English the state’s official language and a second Constitutional amendment to ban Oklahoma courts from considering international or Sharia law when making decisions. 

Sykes, was the Senate author of legislation placing the two questions before voters.

“I’m extremely pleased that both questions were not only approved, but passed by overwhelming margins,” Sykes said. 

“Yesterday’s awesome support of these two state questions reflects the values and ideals so important to citizens in every part of Oklahoma.”

State Question 751 is a Constitutional amendment that requires all official state actions to be conducted in English, protecting Oklahoma from costly legal actions seeking to force the state to provide services in multiple languages. It received the highest percentage of approval of the nine state questions passed.

State Question 755 is a Constitutional amendment forbidding Oklahoma courts from using foreign or Sharia law as a basis for any legal decisions. Sharia is Islamic law based on the Quran and is used to govern such countries as Iran.

“Certainly each of these measures had critics, but the crushing margins by which these Constitutional amendments passed shows without a doubt that those critics are deeply out of touch with the values and views of Oklahomans, just as Washington D.C. is out of touch with America,” Sykes said.

OK-5 Candidate Kevin Calvey to Protest OKC Area Meeting of Terrorist Front Group

Fifth District Congressional Candidate Kevin Calvey (R-Oklahoma City) today announced a protest of tomorrow’s scheduled meeting of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in the Oklahoma City area.

“CAIR has been identified by several law enforcement sources as a front group or propagandist for terrorists, including Hamas, and CAIR has been frequently denounced by the Anti-Defamation League for their anti-Semitic and anti-American statements,” said Calvey, who prosecuted terrorists while deployed with the Army National Guard in Iraq in 2007-2008.

Calvey was awarded the Bronze Star medal for his service in Iraq. “Oklahomans should be outraged that a group like CAIR is operating in our midst,” said Calvey.

“I urge fellow Oklahomans to join me in peacefully protesting the CAIR meeting tomorrow night.”

CAIR is an unindicted co-conspirator in the US Justice Department’s terrorist-financing case against the Texas-based Holy Land Foundation.



The FBI broke official ties to CAIR a little over a year ago due to concerns about CAIR’s ties to Hamas.

CAIR, which styles itself as the nation’s largest Islamic advocacy group, announced it will host a “Town Hall” meeting on the subject of airport profiling and security. The meeting will be held tomorrow, Friday, January 15, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. at Home Creations, 2280 North Broadway, Moore, Oklahoma.

Calvey urged protesters to arrive early to make their views about terrorism known.

“This is not about protesting Islam. This is about protesting terrorism. There are many Muslims who cooperate with America and our allies in the fight against terrorism,” said Calvey. “This is about protesting one group that appears intent on pushing propaganda for terrorists and hampering America in the fight against terrorism.”

Kevin Calvey is a small businessman and a conservative former State Representative from Del City.

Kevin volunteered to deploy to Iraq as a Captain in the Oklahoma Army National Guard in 2007, and his mission in Iraq was to prosecute al Qaeda leaders and other terrorists in the Iraqi court system. Kevin was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service.

Three earthquakes shook the Oklahoma City metro Tuesday afternoon.

The United States Geological Survey reported a 2.4 magnitude earthquake at 3 p.m. south of Norman a couple of hours after two other minor quakes were reported in Oklahoma Senate District 43.

A 2.7 magnitude earthquake occurred at 12:25 p.m. and a 2.5 magnitude quake at 12:41 p.m. near S.E. 15th Street and Bryant Avenue, according to the USGS.

There were no immediate reports of damage. A 2.5 to 3.0 magnitude quake is normally the smallest felt by humans.

Workers at nearby Tinker Air Force Base reported feeling the quake and noticed desks shaking during the noon quakes.

There have been 13 earthquakes in Oklahoma in the past six months, according to USGS records.

Researchers from Purdue University and Northwestern University say that seismic activity from the the midwestern New Madrid Seismic Zone is shifting to adjacent faults in the nation's midsection, including those in southern Illinois, Arkansas or Oklahoma.

Other scientists called those conclusions premature, in part because the study was based on a relatively narrow time period from the area that remains seismically active.

Moore Delegation Condemns "NUTTY" Westboro Church Protest

The Moore legislative delegation today condemned the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church, an extremist group from Kansas that routinely pickets the funerals of American soldiers.

The group is in Oklahoma this week to protest at Moore High School and the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

“These people aren’t a church; they’re really more of a cult,” said state Rep. Randy Terrill, R-Moore. “This is a small group that gets together and does things to incite violence. And they do it not only to cause a scene, but to provoke a response and then sue in order to fund their radical activities.”

State Rep. Paul Wesselhoft, R-Moore, authored a state law that prevents groups such as the Westboro church from protesting within 500 feet of a funeral.

“The Moore delegation has been active in the effort to target these fringe groups and their ridiculous activities,” Wesselhoft said. “I am proud that we have implemented reasonable time, place and manner restrictions around military funerals so grieving families can bury their loved ones in peace.”

State Sen. Anthony Sykes, R-Moore, has authored legislation this year that would extend the restrictions on funeral protest groups to ban their activities within 1,500 feet of a funeral.

“The Westboro group certainly has a right to say whatever vile, repulsive things they want to say, but that does not mean they have a right to be heard or that people should pay attention to them,” Terrill said. “What makes today’s events so reprehensible is that Westboro is now picketing a high school. Apparently, targeting dead heroes in uniform isn’t enough for these whackos. Now they are going after innocent, defenseless children.”

Moore (Oklahoma) is Booming with New Businesses

In spite of the current economy struggles, new businesses continue to open in Moore, Oklahoma.

Moore City leaders said the community's location, which is located off Interstate 35, has had a positive impact on their economic standing.

Sen. Anthony Sykes (R-District 24) said first impressions are also making a difference.



Developers are still planning to open a new shopping center in the area, which will include Bed Bath & Beyond, Pet Smart and Chick-Fil-A.

"Sales are strong," City Manager Stephen Eddy said. "We're pretty well countering what we're hearing in the national news here."

As the economy slows, city leaders of Moore remain optimistic. They call themselves "Forward Thinking" and plan to stay that way, which is a big selling point for big businesses.

Hoo-ah: Terrill to be Keynote Speaker for Moore 4th of July Veterans’ Event

State Rep. Randy Terrill will be the keynote speaker at a July 4th event held at the Moore Veterans Memorial at the southeast corner of 4th Street and Bryant Ave.

“As we observe the anniversary of our nation’s founding, it is appropriate that we also recognize the sacrifices of the men and women who have kept our nation free,” said Terrill, R-Moore. “I am both honored and excited by this opportunity.”

“While this is an American Legion ceremony, I’d encourage anyone who appreciates the sacrifices of our veterans to attend,” said Preston Simms, commander for American Legion Post 184. “This memorial honors all veterans and we’d love to see our fellow Moore citizens show up in force.”

This is the first Fourth of July ceremony conducted at the memorial since it was completed in August 2007.

Terrill, who chairs the House Revenue and Taxation Subcommittee, has led the charge to create new tax breaks for Oklahoma veterans since Republicans gained control of the Oklahoma House of Representatives in November 2004.

Oklahoma’s benefits for military veterans include the following:

· Up to 75 percent or $10,000 (whichever is greater) in military retirement benefits are now exempt from state income tax.

· 100 percent of service-connected disability benefits are exempt from both federal and state income-tax for most veterans.

· Both active military and veterans receive an ad valorem tax exemption in the amount of $200 of the assessed value of their personal property.
Veterans are also entitled to claim an exemption for the full amount of the fair cash value of their homestead.

· Veterans are exempt from paying motor vehicle excise tax on one vehicle and disabled veterans do not have to pay sales tax on up to $25,000 in purchases each year.

· Sales to the Disabled American Veterans of Oklahoma and their subordinate chapters are also now exempt from sales tax.

· Sales to nonprofit organizations that limit membership to honorable-discharged veterans and provide financial support for the purpose of constructing a memorial or museum are exempt from sales tax.

· Sales to the Oklahoma chapters of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States are exempt from sales tax.

Lawmakers have also voted to honor Oklahoma veterans with special license plates for Congressional Medal of Honor recipients (with no annual registration fee), spouses of veterans killed in action (with only an $8 annual registration fee), veterans who were prisoners of war (at an $8 annual registration fee), the parents of those killed in action (Gold Star license plates), and veterans with at least a 50 percent service-connected disability are entitled to a reduced rate on annual registration and/or a special DAV license plate.

Moore new theater to open in spring

Moore’s new $30 million 20-screen movie theater is expected to open sometime in the spring, city officials said this week.

Deidre Ebrey, director of the Moore Economic Development Authority, told the Oklahoma City Journal Record newspaper that city officials were anticipating the theater’s opening in early spring.

“The end of March is a possibility,” Ebrey told the newspaper. “Warren theathers hasn’t selected a firm date but we are anticipating at the end of March of the very beginning of April.”

Theater officials, Ebrey said, probably will open the facility during a particular movie “but we don’t know which one right now.”
