Oklahomans have always shown courage when it comes to serving our nation. Whenever war and conflict occur, our state has been a leader in the number of citizens willing to fight for freedom. The War on Terror is no exception.
Men and women from every part of the state have answered the call to duty. In honoring the service and sacrifice of our troops and veterans, two bills were unanimously approved by the State Senate this past week.
Senate Bill 1134 asks that all state agencies, organizations, civic groups and individuals who display the U.S. flag, fly it at half-mast on the first Monday of each month. This is to pay honor and tribute to those Oklahomans in the armed forces who are serving or who have served in the War on Terror, especially those who have given their lives.
The American flag is the symbol representing freedom that unites this country. People in other nations would sacrifice everything to have our precious freedoms, including the right to worship as we choose, freedom of speech, the right to protect ourselves and our families, and so much more. Our flag also serves as a memorial of the men and women who fought and died for those rights. Flying the flag at half-mast is an appropriate way to honor those who have sacrificed so much on our behalf.
The second piece of legislation, Senate Bill 1138, authorizes the creation of a special motor vehicle tag for Oklahomans who have served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The idea for this special tag came from one such veteran.
The bravery and heroism of over 21,000 Oklahoma soldiers on active or reserve duty having served in Operation Iraqi Freedom deserve to be lauded.
Both bills passed this week are a great tribute in remembering the bravery and sacrifices of thousands of Oklahoma men and women.
