Legislation that would give Oklahomans more time to renew a driver’s license has passed the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
House Bill 1092, by state Rep. John Trebilcock, allows an expired Oklahoma driver license to be considered a valid form of identification for the purpose of renewing the license for up to 30 days past expiration.
“The state no longer sends a written notice in advance of your driver’s license expiration, so many people unintentionally let it lapse,” said Trebilcock, R-Broken Arrow. “Unfortunately, once your license has expired, you can’t renew it unless you provide another form of ID, which is difficult for many people to obtain. My legislation will simply provide an extra month for people to renew a license without having to obtain another ID.
“When I was knocking doors during my last campaign, this issue came up more than any other. I’m proud to say their complaints did not fall on deaf ears at the Capitol today. Passage of this legislation is an example of democracy in action, of the people’s government responding to their wishes.”
House Bill 1092 passed the Oklahoma House of Representatives on a 91-0 vote. It now proceeds to the state Senate.
