Hunter takes GOP primary
Duncan D. Hunter defeated a field of Republicans by a landslide yesterday in the primary election to replace his father, Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, in a sprawling East County congressional district.
The competition for the only open congressional seat in the county has led to a showdown this fall between two candidates leaning on their military credentials. Hunter, a Marine Corps Reserve captain, will face Mike Lumpkin, a retired Navy SEAL who defeated Vickie Butcher in the Democratic primary.
During the campaign, Hunter emphasized national security and border issues. Last night, he attributed his victory to his conservative ideals that “resonated with the people of East County.”
Lumpkin interpreted his showing as a sign that he focused on the issues 52nd Congressional District voters care most about, such as the economy and border security.
“It is a clear signal that the voters are saying it's time to end the divisive partisan politics and to start talking about the real issues that affect Americans every day,” Lumpkin said.
Libertarian Michael Benoit, who ran unopposed, will also be on the November ballot.
Hunter, 31, held a considerable lead in both fundraising and polls in the heavily Republican district, but his GOP rivals pushed hard until the end, mailing stacks of campaign literature, recording automated calls and waving street signs during morning rush hours. His father, who made an ill-fated bid for the Republican presidential nomination, is retiring from Congress.
Brian Jones, 39, a Santee city councilman and a former minister, sought to attract GOP voters largely with mailers that kept with his social conservative themes. One that attracted attention featured a photo of Jones and his 13-year-old son holding a rifle, with a caption explaining that the candidate was giving his son gun-safety lessons. Jones had pledged to “vigorously support gun rights and fight liberal judges, special interest groups and politicians who want to take away our liberties.”
Last-minute efforts, including an infusion of outside cash, helped Bob Watkins, 65, a businessman and president of the San Diego County Board of Education.
Watkins' bid benefited from at least $223,000 worth of advertising – TV ads, radio ads, mailers – from an independent campaign waged by William R. Bradley, according to campaign finance records. Watkins' campaign said they did not know Bradley, nor did they have anything to do with the ads. However, Bradley had contributed to the Watkins campaign last year.
On the Democratic side, Butcher, 66, a nonprofit executive, emphasized her opposition to the war in Iraq and support for universal health care in radio ads, while Lumpkin, 43, played up his 21 years of service in the Navy while vowing to fight deficit spending and secure the borders. Lumpkin collected endorsements from many of the local Democratic clubs and far outspent Butcher.

Smith ‘grandstanding’

I read with humorous, yet serious, interest the articles in the Tulsa World on April 3 and May 29 regarding Cherokee Chief Chad Smith’s reaction and comments as to state Rep. Randy Terrill’s efforts to enact a law making “English-only” the official language in Oklahoma. He alleges forced assimilation and punishment in Indian boarding schools for speaking their native language as his reasons against the bill, and says he will fight any attempt to make “English-only” a law. (It is my understanding that Smith himself cannot speak Cherokee fluently.)
I am not surprised by Smith’s actions. He is an expert at grandstanding to be noticed. As a former tribal councilor with the Cherokee Nation, I remember his antics at various times before he became chief. One instance in particular was during a council session where he began yelling and making such a nuisance of himself that the chair had to have security remove him from the council chambers to conduct business. Instead of leaving the chambers when asked by security, like a distinguished gentleman would do, he lay down in the aisle, and security had to bodily carry him out while screaming and waving his arms and legs. Another instance was his shameful actions at the Cherokee courthouse “take-over” attempt, where he was accused of assaulting a police officer.
Previously, Smith alleged forced assimilation by stating that, as a child, his father had his mouth washed out with soap for speaking Cherokee while at an Indian boarding school.
Well, I don’t know where Smith’s father went to boarding school, but I don’t believe it happened. I went to an Indian boarding school one of the biggest and I never saw any punishment for speaking the native language.
In fact, the Navajos nearly always spoke their language, and many subjects were taught to them in Navajo. Regardless, in most classes except for the Navajo classes, there were members of several different tribes, and it would have been impossible for students to communicate in their own languages because all tribes spoke different languages. When the students were out of class and in their rooms, or at leisure times, they could speak any language they wanted to, if their friends could also speak the same native language. Occasionally, students of the same tribe did speak to each other in their native language. But all of them could speak English, so that is the way most students communicated. In fact, I never knew any student who could not speak English, except some of the Navajo.
Rep. Terrill’s proposal to make English the official language in Oklahoma only makes good sense and has nothing to do with assimilation and, as Terrill emphasized, would not affect the use of American Indian languages. Nowhere do you see instructions written in any Indian language as you now see in Spanish i.e., telephone instructions, ATM machines, medications, assembly directions and many other instances. Now, they even give driver’s license exams in Spanish.
If the driver applicants can’t read a driving manual in English, how do they read road signs in English, or are we now going to have to replace all road signs with both English and Spanish? That would be absurd, and what if they carried it further to include other languages such as many different Indian tribal languages, German, Japanese, Chinese, etc.? That would be ludicrous. This is America, where English is the common language.
If a person wants to speak and read other languages, that is their right. But to demand that other languages be included in all instructions and common usage is ridiculous.
Finally, if Chief Smith wanted to do something productive and worthwhile for the good of his country and his tribe, he would support Terrill’s proposed law to make English the state’s official language. That would also help keep illegal Mexicans from being provided with services and accommodations by eliminating information in languages other than English. Perhaps Smith isn’t aware of all the illegal Mexicans who have saturated the U.S., causing serious social and economic problems and who, I understand, have caused several Cherokee contractors and sub-contractors to go out of business because they could not compete with the “cheap Mexican labor.”
Any observant person cannot help but see the problems caused by the influx of illegals and should be deeply concerned. Besides the illegals being in violation of the law for sneaking across the border, they could also be murderers, drug dealers, rapists or terrorists.
I, for one, strongly support Terrill’s efforts to deal with illegal immigrants and pray that Chief Smith would quit grandstanding and support him also.

The turning point in the Pacific War began JUNE 4, 1942. American intelligence intercepted Japan's plans to capture Midway Island and from there, Hawaii.
The outnumbered U.S. Pacific Fleet ambushed the Japanese armada, but was losing badly.
It was not until American dive bombers, navigating by guess and by God, sighted the Japanese aircraft carriers far below through a break in the clouds at the precise moment the Japanese planes had left to attack the U.S.S. Yorktown.
In just five minutes, the screeching American dive bombers sank three Japanese carriers, and a fourth shortly after.
After this providential event, Japan was forced to go on the defensive.
On the Pacific War, President Roosevelt said, August 12, 1943:
"Three weeks after the armies of the Japanese launched their attack on Philippine soil, I sent a proclamation...to the people of the Philippines...that their freedom will be redeemed...
The great day of your liberation will come, as surely as there is a God in Heaven."
Roosevelt stated October 20, 1944:
"On this occasion of the return of General MacArthur to Philippine soil...we renew our pledge.
We and our Philippine brothers in arms - with the help of Almighty God - will drive out the invader."

Local Officials Call for Public Input as Casino Deadline Looms
With a critical deadline approaching, Oklahoma City residents in the vicinity of a proposed casino are rallying their neighbors to voice their opposition.Friday is the last business day that the Bureau of Indian Affairs will take public input regarding the controversial casino proposed by the Absentee Shawnee Tribe to be located just 1.7 miles away from Remington Park.
The comment period officially ends Sunday, June 8th, so local leaders
are urging those who wish to participate in the public comment to get
their messages to the BIA by Friday.
State Rep. Mike Shelton, whose district contains Remington Park, will
help lead a community meeting Tuesday night to raise awareness of the
casino's enormous negative influence to the area and to remind residents
that their opinion won't matter after Friday when the BIA's 30 day
public comment period ends.
While local, state and federal officials are publicly opposing the casino, local leaders like Shelton, say input from citizens in the immediate area is crucial.
"The BIA must consider the will of the people, and we must clearly communicate that will, but we have only until Friday for that message to
count," said Shelton.
The public meeting will be held at Millwood Arts Academy at 6700 Martin
Luther King. Millwood is one of the school districts whose tax base would be devastated if the BIA allows the casino and the subsequent demise of Remington Park. The meeting begins at 6:30 PM.
Shelton, who represents District, said he urges all Oklahomans to convey
to the BIA the hurt that will visit the region if the federal agency permits the casino.
"There will be so many people, businesses, schools injured by this casino that is incomprehensible that the BIA would for even one moment consider allowing this proposal," said Shelton. They have a job to do, but so do the people who live and work here. That is why we must send a perceptible and unambiguous message to the BIA, the Department of the
Interior and even the President: do no harm to northeast Oklahoma City.
So it is vitally important that the public make its way out to Millwood Tuesday night to unite and focus our opposition."
IMMIGRATION ARREST - Honduran nationals taken into custody
OWASSO - Five Honduran nationals were arrested and taken into custody, Sunday at about 4:45 p.m. for immigration violations.
Immigrations and Customs Agent Van Stephens ordered the arrest.
No other information has been made available.
Oklahoma has the nation's toughest immigration laws. Lawmakers put in place HB 1804 last year.
While immigration enforcement has been the task of federal authorities, Tulsa County Sheriff's Department officers have received training on making arrests for being in the United States illegally.
HB 1804 also made it illegal for anyone to knowingly assist or provide help to someone who is in the country illegally.

One of three Presidents to marry in office and the only President to wed on White House grounds, Grover Cleveland married Frances Folsom, and together they had five children.
Cleveland, both the 22nd and 24th President, stated in his 2nd Inaugural, March 4, 1893:
"Above all, I know there is a Supreme Being who rules the affairs of men and whose goodness and mercy have always followed the American people, and I know He will not turn from us now if we humbly and reverently seek His powerful aid."
In a Message to Congress, December 2, 1895, President Cleveland stated:

State Election Board Launches Polling Place Locator
State Election Board Secretary Michael Clingman recently announced the launch of a new polling place locator feature on the State Election Board's Web site. "The polling place locator may help thousands of Oklahomans verify the locations of their precinct polling places for the upcoming elections," Clingman said.Registered voters need only to enter their last name, date of birth, and Zip Code and the locator produces a list of possible matches. The voter selects his or her name from the list and receives the name and address of the assigned polling place as well as a list of his or her Congressional, State Senate, State House, and County Commissioner Districts.
In the event that the locator is unable to match the voter's information, the voter should call his or her local County Election Board office directly. The locator also provides the appropriate contact information.
"The polling place locator is a great tool for Oklahoma voters who just need to verify their correct place to vote on election day," Clingman said.
"Voters can access the polling place locator from any computer connected to the internet at any time, including on election day when it may be difficult to reach their local County Election Board office by telephone."

(Florida) Local Latin American advocacy group supports driver licences for illegals
A local Latin American advocacy group supports a resolution that would allow illegal immigrants to get driver licenses.
The League of United Latin American Citizens’ Civil Right Council 7115 supported the resolution, passed by its state chapter in Miami last week, during a press conference Thursday at the Golden Gate Community Center.
Council President Victor Valdes presented the resolution, aimed at providing driver licenses to undocumented immigrants with no criminal record.
On one side, there is the humanitarian issue that affects the unlicensed immigrants, Valdes said.
“But I realized that there would be racist people out there that would say, ‘Well, we don’t care,’” he said.
Instead the group opted to approach it from the safety perspective, Valdes said.
“If there are 1 million undocumented drivers in Florida, while we (licensed drivers) are on the road, the chances for an accident, regardless of who is at fault, is greater,” he said.
If undocumented drivers have licenses and insurance, the state’s drivers would be safer, Valdes said.
The way things are right now, who would pay if he were in an accident with an unlicensed or uninsured undocumented immigrant, Valdes said.
“It’s the governor’s moral obligation to guarantee Florida’s drivers that the streets are safe for us to drive on,” said Valdes.
Local government officials had a different take on the issue.
Commissioner Fred Coyle said he thought giving driver licenses to illegal immigrants would be a violation of law and that he would strongly oppose such legislation.
“They shouldn’t be driving and they shouldn’t be here,” Coyle said. “A driver’s license gives people a lot of access to things, including an airplane.”
It’s a chance that government should not take, Coyle said.
“We simply can’t tolerate that. If they are undocumented, we simply don’t know who they are, and we shouldn’t be giving them documentation,” Coyle said, adding that such legislation did not make sense. “If they think that it’s going to solve a problem, it won’t be solved by giving the official documentation.”
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office agreed.
“We don’t support changing the law,” said Collier County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Karie Partington. “Giving illegal aliens driver’s licenses would be a violation of state law and the upcoming federal REAL ID act.”
The REAL ID Act of 2005 was passed by Congress to make it more difficult to fraudulently acquire a driver license or ID card, as part of the effort to fight terrorism and reduce fraud.
The act establishes minimum standards for state-issued driver licenses and personal identification cards which include information and security features that must be incorporated into each card; proof of identity and U.S. citizenship or legal status of an applicant; verification of the source documents provided by an applicant; and security standards for the offices that issue the licenses and identification cards.
REAL ID compliant driver licenses and ID cards allow people to board a federally-regulated airplane, access a federal facility or a nuclear power plant.
“It’s a matter of domestic security, because driver’s licenses are such key pieces of documentation,” said Partington.
Valdes said he knows that there are people clamoring for the government to immediately deport all undocumented immigrants as a way to stop them from driving, but that won’t happen overnight.
“(The government) can’t guarantee that they’re going to be able to kick out, within the next 15 to 30 days, the more than 1 million undocumented immigrants in Florida,” said Valdes. “You have to at least give them a license, or else you are putting regular drivers in peril, because these people will still be on the road.”
The resolution, which was unanimously approved by the Florida League of United Latin American Citizens Assembly last week in Miami, is similar to one adopted by New Mexico in 2003 and revamped in 2007.
According to New Mexico documents, residents within that state — with or without a Social Security number— are required to present two forms of identification to obtain a driver license. A person without a Social Security card can present either a tax identification number, a Matricula Consular provided by the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque after February 2005 or a valid foreign passport to obtain a driver license.
Since 2003, New Mexico has issued 50,562 driver licenses to foreign nationals or those without a legal presence. Out of the 50,562, a total 10,790 issued since Oct. 1.
“We think this law change, has benefited New Mexico,” said Ken Ortiz, the Director of the Motor Vehicle Division for the state of New Mexico.
Ortiz said, that by being able to issue illegal immigrants a driver license, the law has helped accomplish two of the state’s main goals.
“We can test them and make sure that they are safe drivers,” Ortiz said. We know who they are, we know where they live. We feel that it brings them out of the shadows.”
He added that with a valid license, a foreign national would be less likely to leave the scene of an accident, and more likely to report a crime.
Once in the system, the state can keep track of traffic citations and monitor vehicle insurance, which is also a positive, Ortiz said.
“I think it’s an overall benefit for the state,” he said.
New Mexico is one of seven states in the U.S. that do not require drivers to prove legal status to obtain a license.
The next step is for Florida’s delegation to take the resolution to LULAC’s national convention on July 12, said Valdes.
Soon after that, he said, Gov. Charlie Crist and the Florida Legislature can expect to receive the proposal.
